Do you have a Creative Outlet?
Creative outlets come in many forms and fashions. From that karaoke night at the local bar, to meticulously planning your next kitchen remodel, creative outlets can pop up anywhere. Finding yours isn’t always easy. With countless daily distractions, setting ME time aside can be difficult. Carving out a little personal time is important for your overall mental health! Your creative outlet can help motivate you to actually put away some well-deserved “me time.”
Don’t have a creative outlet? Don’t even know where to begin to look? Here are some tips you can try to find that creative outlet to get you on the fast track to some amazing “me time” and decompress your life.
5 tips to finding your creative outlet!
1. Notice when you can’t sleep at night.
Think about the last things on your mind before you drift off to sleep at night. What’s keeping you awake? Have you ever had an idea that you had to flush out before you could sleep?? That nagging thought that’s keeping you awake could be your creative outlet! Run with it. Pay attention to it. Let it grow and chase it. Maybe you can’t stop thinking about a birthday gift for a close friend. Pinterest keeps reeling you in and you scroll through pages and pages of homemade ideas. Creating gifts, the next best cookie recipe, how-to videos or anything. This could be your creative outlet. It can all be the jumping off point for your next creative, stress-relieving move.
2. Remember what has inspired you before.
Think back to when you were a child. What did you like to do then creatively? Quoting a favorite movie of mine. “Never loses your childhood enthusiasm and things will come your way”- quote from Under The Tuscan Sun! Get that paint brush out again, dust off those ice skates and try, try, again!
3. Try something you have always wanted to do!
Write that book, get on the stage, try out for your local theatre. Branch out of your comfort zone. Once you challenge yourself to step out of your safety box of familiar habits, you will shine like you never knew you could. Your creative outlet is right there, just beyond arm’s length. All you need to do is reach for it. Once you push yourself to try, you will uncover amazing things and be surprised. The stress that thrives in all of your old habits will vanish in the blink of an eye. If you’re constantly doing the same things over and over, you’re likely bogged down by anxieties that have only been reaffirmed over and over again. Trying something new that you have always thought about trying will break down those pent-up anxieties and help you to move forward with your life.
4. Find a creative studio nearby.
There are many different types of studio now, find one in your area and just try it! If anything you will come out with a great experience. This goes hand-in-hand with stepping out of your comfort zone, but allows you to have a concrete step towards breaking free from your habits. Most studios are full of staff that can help inspire you to find your creative outlet. Make a fun night with friends and your time will be very well spent.
5. Pump up your jam! Pump it up!
If all else fails play your favorite song and blast it! Sing at the top of your lungs and let loose! Playing your tunes at their loudest is nothing short of real liberation. Dance around in your socks, nobody’s looking at you. Have fun and don’t be too hard on yourself.
The point it just try something! It’s easy to be complacent and go with the motion. Trust me I have been there, but after you find a creative outlet you can watch your stress melt away and you get a little piece of YOU back!! For more information on stress relief by creative outlet please review the study from the American Journal of Public Health.
